La Estancia is a short documentary portraying the lives of five families living and working as migrant laborers in Baja California South. The film intertwines the families stories about their migration into Baja from mainland Mexico, the contrasts between the struggles they face living in the migrant labor camps verses privately owned farms, and their hopes and dreams for a better future.
Immigration into Baja California is quite common for families that travel from impoverished community states like Oaxaca and Guerrero following the work. Strawberries, Figs, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and watermelon are among some of the predominant vegetables grown in that region.
Life in the migrant labor camps can become difficult as many families face economic deprivation, neglected health care, teen pregnancy, cultural traditions broken and education that becomes abandoned due to the high increase of child labor in the work force. Our film will expose some of the issues as an attempt to raise public awareness and help meet the needs of those families towards education for their children.
